Experience the New World Symphony in South Beach

If you’re looking for more to do in South beach than tanning, relaxing, and partying, no worries, because there’s plenty to do! In fact, South Beach has a thriving diverse culture and arts community that visitors can experience in many ways. One of these ways is through music at the New World Symphony, which is on 17th Street in South Beach.  The New World Symphony, which is America’s Orchestral Academy, prepares graduates of music programs for leadership roles in professional orchestras and ensembles. It was co-founded by Artistic Director Michael Tilson Thomas and Ted Arison 29 years ago to train young musicians; they have performed at New York’s Carnegie Hall and Paris’ Bastille Opera.

In 2011, NWS moved into the futuristic looking building built by Frank Gehry. The architecture of the building was meant to blend in with the area. Inside, there is a 756-seat main hall, many rehersal halls, 24 individual rehearsal rooms, 4 ensemble rooms, 3 percussion rooms, and a multi-purpose room where 86 fellows in residence reside. South Beach visitors can walk by and see the musicians practicing through the windows.

The NWS invites the public in for performances. Throughout the year, the students perform under the direction of visiting conductors. Within the atrium of the build, Thierry’s is a restaurant where you can grab a bite to eat. It is run by celebrity chef-caterer Thierry Isambert. The food served is a blend of Mediterranean, Caribbean and Pacific flavors.

Around the NWS building is the Miami Beach SoundScape Park where people can enjoy classic music and more outside in the park. There is a 7,000 square-foot projection wall that screens a live feed of indoor performances for the public to enjoy for free outside. There is also a Cinema Series every Wednesday night on the projection. The outdoor park is full of giant silver structures and paths.

Check Out Art Basel While in South Beach

When you’re in South Beach, you not only have the opportunity to soak up some sun and enjoy wonderful food, you get to experience the area’s rich culture through the art world. Each year, Miami Beach is home to Art Basel, which stages international art shows that provides platforms for galleries and artists from all around the world to exhibit and get their work out to the public. This fair is staged annual in Basel, Hong Kong, and Miami Beach. This year, Art Basel will be held December 1 to 4 at the Miami Beach Convention Center, Collins Park and Soundscape Park.

In this show, 269 galleries from North America, Latin America, Europe, Asia, and Africa will showcase work from masters of modern and contemporary art, along with new and young artists to the scenes. There will be paintings, sculptures, photography, films, installations, and other types of work on display in the main exhibition hall in the convention center.

Tickets range from $50 to $105 depending on the type of ticket purchased. Throughout the week, there are guided tours, openings, receptions, performances, talks, films, breakfasts, and shows for people to attend.

Art Basel is organized by sectors which each showcase different types of work and artists for visitors. The Nova sector, for example, is designed for galleries to present one to three artists showing work that has been created within the last three years, featuring juxtapositions and fresh work. The Survey sector features precise art historical projects. For the Public sector, 20 large-scale pieces will be installed in the parks for people to view and enjoy. Other sectors include: film, magazines, kabinett, edition, and positions.
