South Beach Events in December

It’s the time of year when South Beach gets hotter than ever. With colder climates up north, more people are flocking down to Florida; because of that, the South Beach area provides visitors with more events and happenings for them to enjoy during their visit.  South Beach is a great area to spend a holiday break with loved ones. Design Miami | Nov 30 – Dec 4
Design Miami is a design forum that hosts high-end fairs where art is exhibited and discussed. The world’s top galleries come together and present amazing, top-quality exhibitions of furniture, lighting, and objets d’art. There are panels and lectures from the design, architecture, art, and fashion world. Tickets are $25 online and $30 in person. Design Miami is located across from the Miami Beach Convention Center at Meridian Avenue and 19th Street in Miami Beach. You can see a show schedule here.

New World Symphony Concerts | Dec 14, 16, 17
Dec 14 – Christmas Concert: This will be held at 8 p.m. This concert will be put on by the Choir of St. Patrick Church Miami beach and conducted by Brother Mark Spencer. Christmas carols and songs will be performed. Tickets cost $20

Dec 16 – The Sounds of the Season: This concert will be held at 7:30 p.m. This is a festive program put on by the New World Symphony with selections from many cultural heritages. Tickets cost $35.

Dec 17 – The Sounds of the Season: This concert will be held at 7:30 p.m. at SoundScape Park on the screen with a live feed from inside. This concert is free.

Moscow Ballet’s Great Russian Nutcracker | Dec 30
This ballet is held at The Fillmore Miami Beach at the Jackie Gleason Theater at 7 p.m. It is suitable for all ages. Tickets cost $30.75 to $178.75.

Miami Beach New Year’s Eve Party | Dec. 31

On New Year’s Eve, South Beach’s Ocean Drive is blocked off for people to walk around and celebrate the New Year. People gather on the beach near 8th Street and Ocean Drive to watch the Fireworks. Lummus Park throws a party from 9 p.m. to 2 a.m. with live music and their own fireworks. Many of South Beach’s restaurants host their own celebrations with varied menus and entertainment; seating for these restaurants goes into the closed off street, as well.

South Beach isn’t just another beach; it happens to be filled with a rich history and culture. Luckily, people get to experience this city through many tours. The Miami Design Preservation League (MDPL) hosts several different tours throughout the year. MDPL historians and architects lead these tours across South Beach.

MDPL’s is a non-profit organization whose mission is to be devoted to preserving, protecting, and promoting the cultural, social, economic, environmental, and architectural integrity of the Miami Beach Architectural Historic District. It is the oldest Art Deco Society in the world.

Below, are some of the great South Beach tours MDPL offers.

Jewish Miami Beach Tour
$25 adult; $20 student
In this tour, people get to hear about the rise and fall of the Jewish population across Miami Beach in the last 100 games. Tour attendees will learn about Jewish people, institutions, and architecture. Tours begin at the Jewish Museum of Florida, 301 Washington Ave., Miami Beach. This tour occurs on the second Sunday every month at 11 a.m.

Art Deco Walking Tour
$25 adult, $20 student
This is a 90-minute tour that gives visitors an overview of the Art Deco, Mediterranean Revival and Miami Modern styles found around Miami Beach’s Architectural Historic District. People will explore the outside and interiors of buildings.  Tours are held Friday through Wednesday at 10:30 a.m., and Thursdays at 10:30 a.m. and 6:30 p.m. Tours begin at the Art Deco Welcome Center, 1001 Ocean Dr., Miami Beach.

Gay & Lesbian Walking Tour
$25 adult; $20 student
On this tour, people will learn about the contributions gay and lesbian people have made to the community throughout Miami Beach’s history and in present day. This tour also will show people the gay and lesbian “places to be” when going out in South Beach. Tours begin at the Art Deco Welcome Center, 1001 Ocean Dr., Miami Beach. They are held on the second Saturday of every month at 11 a.m.
