Experience the New World Symphony in South Beach

If you’re looking for more to do in South beach than tanning, relaxing, and partying, no worries, because there’s plenty to do! In fact, South Beach has a thriving diverse culture and arts community that visitors can experience in many ways. One of these ways is through music at the New World Symphony, which is on 17th Street in South Beach.  The New World Symphony, which is America’s Orchestral Academy, prepares graduates of music programs for leadership roles in professional orchestras and ensembles. It was co-founded by Artistic Director Michael Tilson Thomas and Ted Arison 29 years ago to train young musicians; they have performed at New York’s Carnegie Hall and Paris’ Bastille Opera.

In 2011, NWS moved into the futuristic looking building built by Frank Gehry. The architecture of the building was meant to blend in with the area. Inside, there is a 756-seat main hall, many rehersal halls, 24 individual rehearsal rooms, 4 ensemble rooms, 3 percussion rooms, and a multi-purpose room where 86 fellows in residence reside. South Beach visitors can walk by and see the musicians practicing through the windows.

The NWS invites the public in for performances. Throughout the year, the students perform under the direction of visiting conductors. Within the atrium of the build, Thierry’s is a restaurant where you can grab a bite to eat. It is run by celebrity chef-caterer Thierry Isambert. The food served is a blend of Mediterranean, Caribbean and Pacific flavors.

Around the NWS building is the Miami Beach SoundScape Park where people can enjoy classic music and more outside in the park. There is a 7,000 square-foot projection wall that screens a live feed of indoor performances for the public to enjoy for free outside. There is also a Cinema Series every Wednesday night on the projection. The outdoor park is full of giant silver structures and paths.
